Read Press release from MILWAUKEE, WI (Feb. 6, 2007) — Every single kick in a football game involves one of these three major events:
  • a try for points,
  • a change in possession,
  • or a significant swing in field position.
It's a valuable and important skill that few youth and high school teams can boast. On July 30, the Milwaukee Wave and Kohl's Kicking Camps team up to change that, bringing top-notch instruction to a one-day camp at Whitefish Bay High School.

Andy and Jamie Kohl were both high school all-state kickers in Wisconsin who went on to Division 1 college careers. Andy signed a free-agent contract as a punter with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Jamie did the same as a placekicker with the Seattle Seahawks. Their father, John, has been in coaching for 22 seasons and guided both his boys to their success. All three are experienced coaches who have seen numerous graduates of their camps obtain Division 1 scholarships.

“I would say 90 percent of our national-level kickers and punters have soccer in their past,” said Jamie Kohl. “We feel it’s a fertile area to try and find some talent.”

Milwaukee Wave players also will be present at the camp. The techniques used by Wave players to fire rockets on the goal in MISL games are very similar to those used to kick 50-yard field goals, which makes the partnership with the Kohls both unique and fitting.

"I think it’s just a natural fit, since all placekickers are soccer-style placekickers," said Keith Tozer, Wave head coach and director of soccer operations. "Matt Bahr, who kicked for the Cleveland Browns, was a teammate of mine at Penn State. He had tremendous success in college soccer and also in the National Football League.”

In addition to drills and repetitions, Kohl's Kicking Camps make use of video technology to review and perfect techniques. Players also will be advised on the path to college football. For those with aspirations to continue kicking in college, the Kohls run a national scholarship camp that raises the profile of potential college players.

Whitefish Bay High School, host for this year's Wave/Kohl’s camp, is installing Field Turf as part of a wholesale renovation of its football facilities. Additional grass practice fields and classrooms will also be used.

“We’re excited to be with the Wave, which has been known for a long time to have an excellent operation and camp setup,” Jamie Kohl said. “Their name is well respected in the Milwaukee area.”

Cost of the camp is $225 and includes a T-shirt and lunch, as well as premier kicking instruction. For more information on the camps, visit www.kohlskicking.com. Online registration is available.
